Success Story
CaixaBank

At CaixaBank, a strategic vision to adopt a Domain Driven Design approach to the institution’s IT landscape quickly revealed a major change management challenge. Mapping the BIAN reference map, as the leading standardized industry model, showed that aligning the bank’s IT landscape to a domain approach was to be a project-by-project process. This meant not just clearly defining a strategy, but conveying it to the entire IT organization as clearly as possible in order to deliver cohesive parallel transformation initiatives.
The bank’s IT strategy team therefore chose to implement a bespoke visual and interactive discovery tool called Application Functional Map to help IT employees navigate and understand all functionalities and the domains in which they are classified.
Implemented using the Kibana platform in Elastic, the Application Functional Map offers users three different lenses on both the bank’s legacy IT state, its target state, based on BIAN and its Service Domains and also the transition. Using BIAN as one of the basic pillars of the target state, and as a reference employed by CaixaBank for planning, means that the bank can effectively avoid inefficiency and duplication of functionality. The transformation strategy is now being communicated, with the support of the Application Functional Map, to over 1000 IT employees.
“We are delighted by how this project has put internal users intuitively in touch with the transformative power of the BIAN approach” – Xavier Gonzalez, Head of IT Strategy
